[codex] I.

MODES OF WORK

The program combines interconnected modes of artistic, genealogical, material, technical, and critical inquiry.

Design presentation and contextualization

Participants present their practices, methods, formative paradigms, prototypes, and questions. Presentation articulates design decisions, technical lineages, inherited assumptions, and unresolved problems for collective examination.

Practice-led development

Participants develop projects through sustained exchange involving discussion, listening, making, coding, assembly, testing, revision, comparative experimentation, consultation, and deliberate negotiation of artistic decisions within individual and collaborative projects.

Genealogical and material inquiry

Historical instruments, patents, drawings, recordings, manuals, tools, components, code, and standards are examined as sources and agents of paradigms. Analysis may address provenance, mediation, transmission, fabrication, classification, ownership, repair, use, and context.

Interaction inquiry

Participants investigate how instruments become playable, intelligible, and consequential without reducing evaluation to specifications. Attention centers on material behavior, affordance, resistance, feedback, embodiment, listening, learning, agency, adaptability, and real-time musical decisions.

Critical reflection

Participants examine the assumptions, values, methods, and structures informing their work. Reflection encompasses individual projects, technical practices, collaborative relationships, and genealogies of originality, authenticity, and excellence.

Workshop as inquiry

The workshop is both a site and method of inquiry. It reveals how paradigms operate through materials and systems, where inherited criteria become tangible, and how technical, embodied, relational, conceptual, and structural decisions interact over time.

Public presentation

Projects are presented at the seventh Bled Contemporary Music Week, entering an artistic and discursive context. Public presentation marks the residency’s provisional culmination while opening each instrument and inquiry to further use, interpretation, response, and development.
