CONTEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Throughout the program, participants situate their work in relation to the following conceptual framework:
SOURCE, SUBSTANCE, AND STRUCTURE: Paradigms as Musical Knowledge—Genealogies and Futures
These terms name interconnected fields of inquiry rather than a prescriptive brief. Together, they offer a shared vocabulary for examining where instrumental paradigms come from, how they become materially, technically, and perceptually effective, and which relationships govern their transmission, recognition, evaluation, and transformation.
The framework accommodates multiple, potentially divergent artistic, craft-based, technological, scholarly, and cultural positions. Participants are not expected to illustrate the theme or reach a unified conclusion. Instead, they are invited to formulate questions, test assumptions, and situate their practices within wider musical, historical, material, technological, institutional, ecological, social, and philosophical contexts.
SOURCE
Source directs attention to the people, materials, lineages, artifacts, concepts, environments, and systems from which instruments and instrumental paradigms emerge.
A source may be a historical instrument, patent, drawing, schematic, manuscript, recording, workshop, tool, material, component, code repository, standard, teacher, craft tradition, oral history, industrial process, repair practice, community, or embodied memory. Sources preserve and transform information: they frame, authorize, omit, and shape what may be reconstructed, learned, repeated, valued, or claimed as new.
Source also includes situated knowledge carried by makers, performers, repairers, engineers, programmers, listeners, and communities. Touch, measurement, calibration, fabrication skill, diagnostic listening, physical habit, and shared experience are not neutral conduits of production; they are active inheritances establishing horizons of intelligibility, legitimacy, feasibility, and possibility.
Participants may consider:
– Which sources shape the paradigms through which I conceive and develop instruments?
– Whose labor, knowledge, or authority makes those sources available?
– What has been preserved, altered, standardized, obscured, excluded, or forgotten?
– How do workshops, archives, patents, platforms, institutions, and technologies organize instrumental knowledge?
– When does inheritance become reconstruction, adaptation, appropriation, critique, or invention?
SUBSTANCE
Substance concerns how instrumental paradigms become material, embodied, sonic, technical, and perceptible. It asks how knowledge acquires force through matter, energy, resistance, interaction, sound, attention, and experience.
For inventors and makers, knowledge may reside in cutting, joining, shaping, casting, printing, soldering, coding, tuning, measuring, troubleshooting, and listening. These capacities are never purely technical: they embody assumptions about responsiveness, timbre, efficiency, expression, durability, difficulty, and value. They may be demonstrated, sensed, adapted, and shared before being fully verbalized.
In use, an instrument emerges through materials, mechanisms, circuits, software, bodies, gestures, acoustics, environments, and techniques. A design acquires weight, resistance, latency, instability, affordance, and expressive consequence through interaction. These qualities are not incidental; they reveal what an instrumental paradigm enables, requires, distributes, or excludes.
For listeners and performers, instruments organize perception through expectation, recognition, feedback, attention, memory, and surprise. What is heard and playable depends not only on sonic output, but also on interface conventions, bodily techniques, cultural references, spatial conditions, and relations among users, devices, and environments.
Participants may ask:
– How do instrumental paradigms become audible and tangible through materials, gesture, and interface?
– How does an inherited model change when physically and sonically realized?
– Which dimensions of instrument making resist description, measurement, simulation, or preservation?
– How do effort, failure, repair, repetition, and attention shape judgments of value?
– Can prototyping generate knowledge that established musical categories cannot contain?
STRUCTURE
Structure concerns the relationships through which instrumental paradigms acquire coherence, authority, reproducibility, and the capacity to organize musical action and technical development.
Structure is not confined to an instrument’s architecture or formal design. It emerges through components, mappings, controls, protocols, standards, hierarchies, feedback, modular relations, fabrication systems, institutions, and habits of use. Participants examine how structures organize instrumentality—and how practice can disclose or contest established conceptions of originality, authenticity, excellence, virtuosity, and form.
Within instrument development, structure concerns how decisions circulate, whose expertise acquires authority, how agency is distributed, and which inventions receive recognition. Patents, markets, curricula, laboratories, platforms, technical standards, supply chains, tools, funding, access, repairability, and permission to experiment shape what can be imagined, built, maintained, performed, and shared. They organize visibility, legitimacy, ownership, opportunity, and evaluation.
Participants may consider:
– How can an instrument produce coherence without suppressing difference, instability, contingency, or ambiguity?
– How is agency distributed among designer, maker, performer, instrument, audience, and environment?
– Which relationships become structural, and which remain tacit, peripheral, or excluded?
– How do interfaces, protocols, standards, memory, and institutional histories organize action?
– Can collaborative development generate more responsive, accessible, and adaptable instrumental systems?
– What might structure mean under the conditions of instrument invention and use?
Taken together, source, substance, and structure provide a framework for examining how instrumental paradigms are inherited, materialized, organized, legitimized, and transformed, while asking how musical invention can connect critical genealogy with responsible design and more plural, sustainable, compelling futures.
