ARTISTIC PREMISE

The residency begins from a central proposition: musical instruments are not neutral tools, but operative paradigms organizing bodies, materials, energy, gesture, sound, judgment, and possibility.

Researching, drawing, modeling, making, coding, assembling, tuning, calibrating, listening, testing, performing, documenting, and presenting form interconnected musical work. Each enacts assumptions and can expose or transform the frameworks through which an instrument becomes intelligible and playable.

The residency offers participants a context for examining design decisions alongside the paradigms informing them. Questions of material, mechanism, interface, ergonomics, mapping, feedback, resistance, resonance, latency, durability, repair, accessibility, authorship, and use are considered with history, pedagogy, labor, ecology, authority, identity, and evaluation.

The program invites participants to study originality, authenticity, and excellence as historically produced rather than self-evident. Their meanings shift across periods, technologies, institutions, markets, and communities. Originality may depend on unacknowledged lineages; authenticity on selective constructions of craft or tradition; and excellence on particular resources, bodies, techniques, standards, and recognition systems.

The residency neither fetishizes novelty nor treats criteria as interchangeable. It enables participants to identify governing paradigms, trace their genealogies, test their material and musical effects, formulate alternatives, and develop deliberate, accountable relationships to the standards they inherit and seek to transform.
